School Fun!

Let me say again how much I love both kids teachers - or if I haven't, let me say it now. I love their teachers!  Kevin was learning about compound words a few weeks ago.  Mrs. Grimm described them as words that marry each other.  So what did she do?  She dressed up Kevin and Reese and they demonstrated how the words marry each other.  So cute.

Kevin had a couple weeks of learning about apples.  For the end of the segment they had an apple festival, where they all had to make a craft or treat for the class.  Kevin chose to make a caramel apple monster (as a craft - not a treat).  Here he is decorating.

Caroline's teacher, Mrs. Foster, brought in a Native American and his son to talk about the Florida Indians.  It was a fantastic presentation.  The whole 4th grade got to attend and sat quietly and respectfully for over 2 1/2 hours watching.  The son did a couple of dances.  He was great!

After the inside presentation, the kids all went outside to watch him demonstrate using the adladl (which Tom and the kids learned to use during our trip to South Dakota), bow and arrow, blowgun, and a musket.  They came back in and got some traditional face paint.

On Thursdays I go into the school and help with math centers. Here are Caroline and her friend Maddy playing multiplication baseball.  The pitcher rolls 4 dice.  The batter groups them into 2 pairs.  They add the pairs together and then multiply the sums.  Based on the product, they either get a single, double, triple, home run, or an out.  It is a fun game, but not to sound sexist, but... the boys have fun playing the game, but have trouble with the math.  The girls have fun with the game, but have trouble with the rules of baseball.  Ha!  I mentioned this to Caroline's teacher and she was so dismayed that she decided to have a segment on how to play baseball!
