Vacation Day 6 Cape Cod

On Friday we decided to beat the weekend crowds to Cape Cod.  First up, we hiked on the Nauset Marsh Trail.
There were beautiful swans swimming in the pond.
It was really cool.  We found several large crabs swimming on the fringes of the marsh.  Best part of the marsh... no alligators!  That's what I kept saying and thinking the whole time we were walking along the water's edge.
After Tom and I got yummy lobster rolls for lunch, we stopped at the Highland Light and took a tour to the top.  It was really steep.
While walking along to the lighthouse, we saw that there was a golf course surrounding the area.  We kept trying to divert Tom's attention, but there was nothing we could do when we got to the top.

One thing I learned on this trip, is that I am a terrible photographer.  Nice centering, Mary.  The lighthouse does have a cool story.  It is located on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic.  Due to erosion, the lighthouse was getting closer and closer to the edge.  About 20 years ago, they raised money to move the lighthouse back 450 feet.  Hopefully it will be safe for another 100 years.
We drove to the top of Cape Cod to Race Point Beach.  The sand feels so different on your feet compared to our Jacksonville beaches.
The water was really gross though, not to mention cold.  We had debated changing into swimsuits, but decided we'd rather go to the hotel pool.  We can spend time in the ocean back at home.  We spent a little time skipping stones before heading back to the ranger station.
Junior Ranger badge #3!
Before heading back to Boston, we pulled over for one last hike on the Beech Forest Trail.  There were so many mosquitoes.  It could possibly have been the fastest hikes in the history of hikes.  We were speed walking around the pond.  I had to force a quick stop for a picture to prove we were here.  Now Go!
Tom took off for the car and almost left us to be eaten alive, while I got a picture of the kids at the end of the trail.  The pond was full of beautiful lily pads.  It was really pretty - just too bad we couldn't stay to enjoy it.
On the way home, our intention was to stop to see Plymouth Rock, but there was no parking, the kids were starving, and the write-ups of the site were not impressive.  We decided to skip it and head to dinner and dessert at Friendly's.  The kids even got Grandpa's Friendly Fingers going!
Aaahhh the best part of the day...ice cream!
